Teachers Raise Your Hand

In my book, I explore the consequences of a discrimination complaint I filed against a principal at Galvin Park Secondary College. The toxic leadership within the Department of Education led to the end of my successful teaching career and a serious psychological injury. The prolonged legal battle, lasting over a decade, stripped me of my dignity, identity, and nearly extinguished my will to live. My goal is to protect others from facing the same obstacles I encountered as an injured employee. Three years after thinking my legal struggles were over, new documents emerged, causing me to conclude that the Department of Education was indeed a toxic employer in my case. My motivation to publish my unedited book was driven by three concerns: the mental well-being of teachers, resources for individuals representing themselves in a court of law, and the obstacles encountered by marginalised groups in legal disputes amidst a landscape of exorbitant legal costs.

Teachers Raise Your Hand

The Elusive Truth Looming
Behind the Teacher Shortage

Mary Pateras asserts that her book serves the public good by addressing two paramount issues: safeguarding the mental well-being of educators and shielding self-represented litigants from the burdensome escalation of legal expenses. Through this endeavor, she provides readers with insight into the measures she has undertaken to ensure that the harrowing experiences she endured are not replicated in Australian workplaces or within the legal framework.
